WEEKEND SUMMARY

DHS 45TH REUNION WEEKEND OCTOBER 5-7TH REVIEW

Friday: The weekend kicked off at 8am at the Country Club of Darien. There were 4 foursomes playing golf on a warm fall day with temperatures in the 80’s. The course was in excellent shape and the golfers certainly enjoyed themselves. At noon a walking tour of downtown Darien began in the old HoJo’s parking lot to see the dramatic changes that have taken place. The Darien Sport Shop was the first stop and Steve Zangrillo was there to greet the group. The sport shop has been a Darien landmark for over 60 years (est.1946)! The tour continued with a walk downtown past the new state-of-the-art movie theater and boutiques. Gone are Nancy Pierce’s Real Estate building and Haig Jeweler’s, being replaced by new buildings built by the Dolcetti brothers. Remaining is Greib’s Pharmacy, The Darien Thrift Shop and, of course, The Sugar Bowl. The tour ended at the Sugar Bowl and the group was joined by the golfers and other classmates who continued to show up all afternoon…The inside was decorated with hundreds of Halloween items hanging from the ceiling. Everyone commented on how good the food was, especially the “best” burgers!

The party continued at The Piedmont Club at 7pm. There was a memorabilia table setup on the side and as classmates arrived they received name tags and Bio books. The theme was Italian Night with checkered red and white tablecloths, Chianti bottles, and background music featuring Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett.

Classmates mingled and a roving magician pleasantly mesmerized everyone with his card tricks and disappearing illusions. An Italian buffet, catered by Villa Italia, of Stamford was served for everyone’s enjoyment. Desserts were homemade cookies baked by classmates or their spouses. A big hit!!

The Green Mountain Boys performed and proceeded to bring the house down! They were formed at The University of Vermont and have been singing together for 45 years. Eddie Mallozzi, Peter Wolcott and the only non-DHS Classmate, Bill Bedford sang a wide variety of songs, some written by Eddie and Bill and many by The Kingston Trio and Peter Paul & Mary. By popular demand they came back during the evening to give two more performances…. still a dynamite group and a tremendous “thank you” to Eddie, Peter and Bill for making it such a fun evening.

Saturday: The day kicked off at Weed Beach at 11am. Again, the weather was fantastic: high tide, a cool breeze and in the 80’s. Top notch chefs cooked delicious hamburgers and hot dogs…an enjoyable, laid back day in a quiet place where everyone could catch up on stories and news. The Good Humor truck even showed up mid-afternoon and the scramble for ice cream was instantaneous!! Such memories….

The evening began at 7 pm at The Country Club of Darien on the veranda overlooking the golf course. There was a large table setup with a huge smoked salmon, Mediterranean platter, assorted tapas, and cheeses. Hot appetizers were passed and the Sentinels, an acapella doo wop singing group treated everyone to a few songs. Move over “Jersey Boys”! When the group started singing even the Club members came outside to hear their music.

Our incredible dinner was inside: a gourmet buffet that included filet of beef, salmon, turkey, pasta dishes, etc.…the tables were decorated with tea lights in the center and everyone enjoyed the open seating; a DJ played 60’s music throughout dinner. A custom made chocolate mousse cake ordered just for our special occasion certainly got rave reviews from the crowd.

After dinner The Sentinels were joined by a three-piece band which gave their great singing an even better sound and we were treated to two shows! We finished up the evening with the DJ playing more 60’s music and everyone danced till midnight….

Sunday: We had a casual brunch at The Doubletree Hotel. Classmates enjoyed having more discussions and trading stories with each other and by noon everyone headed out for their next destination. The party was over! A great time was had by all, and much like our 40th , folks joined us from distant places.

DHS ‘62 Website: Do visit our website often! Changes will be made periodically and pictures will be added

More Pictures: Pictures have been uploaded to Smugmug (a photo sharing website) and the link will be sent out soon.

Our 50TH: We are certainly open to any and all suggestions; we’d like to pick a venue that will appeal to many!
